ST. LOUIS - EQUINOX CHAMBER PLAYERS SELECT COMPOSER FOR WOMEN'S HISTORY CELEBRATION
In celebration of National Women's History Month 2003, the Equinox Chamber Players commissioned composer Beth Denisch to write for woodwind quintet and percussion. Her winning proposal to write Women, Power and the Journey includes movements inspired by the accomplishments of Madam C.J. Walker,
Mary Engelbreit, Katherine Dunham and Tina Turner. The Equinox Chamber Players already have an impressive record of sharing civic pride, and now they're expressing this pride in a new and vibrant capacity.
Equinox member Carole Lemire said, "We will preserve history, share inspirations and introduce music written by contemporary women. After months of receiving scores and recordings, it was clear whose style and energy would best suit our sound and interests. Dr. Denisch's work was a stunning application."
The Missouri Historical Society will host the premiere on March 9th, 2003 on the Second Sundays Series, to be surrounded by a week of performing in schools, community centers and other public venues with Denisch in residence. Together they hope that the inclusion of this new commissioned work will inform and remind audiences that there are many women who have contributed to our communities in positive ways. "It is truly impressive how these women have used their strengths and the effect it had on their community and the nation," remarked composer Beth Denisch.
